This special route to Everest Base Camp takes you through the peaceful and stunning Gokyo Valley, crossing glaciers and high mountain passes for an unforgettable adventure. Gokyo Village (4,750m / 15,583ft) sits beside a beautiful blue lake, just below the famous viewpoint, Gokyo Ri.
Unlike the regular Everest Base Camp trail, this route is more challenging but offers fewer crowds, better views, and a deeper experience of nature and Sherpa culture. You’ll walk through quiet valleys, dense forests, and high mountain landscapes, passing by traditional villages and friendly local people.
The trek starts at Namche Bazaar, a lively Sherpa town and a great place to explore. From there, you head northwest into the peaceful Dudh Koshi Valley and reach Gokyo Village. A rest day here lets you climb Gokyo Ri early in the morning for stunning views of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and more.
After that, you walk down to Thangnak, cross the giant Ngozumpa Glacier, and climb over the icy Cho-La Pass. This part is tough but incredibly beautiful. You’ll then connect with the main Everest trail at Lobuche and continue to Gorak Shep, the last village before Base Camp.
From Gorak Shep, you’ll hike to Everest Base Camp (5,364m / 17,598ft), where climbers prepare for the summit. Then, you can also hike up Kala Patthar for one of the best views of Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks. After that, you’ll head downhill back to Lukla over four relaxing days.
